Porcelain Patio and Garden Transformation

The Brief

A family in Chobham had a rear garden that had seen better days. The old paving was uneven and stained, the lawn struggled in the shade, and there was no comfortable spot to sit out and entertain. They wanted a smart, low maintenance space that would work in all weathers, with a covered area for dining and a clear route through the garden. The look they were after was a large porcelain patio with soft, curved lines and planted borders to soften the edges.

What We Did

Our work included:

• Cleared and set out the garden: Lifted the old paving and turf, then set out the new layout on site so the family could see the shape of the patio, paths and gazebo area before we built it.
• Laid a full Type 1 sub base: Excavated to the correct depth and installed a compacted Type 1 sub base with the right falls, so the finished patio drains cleanly and stays stable for years.
• Installed the porcelain patio: Laid large format grey porcelain slabs on a full mortar bed with a primed back for a strong bond, keeping consistent joints and a crisp charcoal border around the edge.
• Built the curved paths: Formed sweeping paths in matching porcelain to link the patio to the rest of the garden, following gentle curves rather than hard straight lines.
• Prepared the gazebo base: Built a level, load bearing base for a timber gazebo, giving the family a covered spot to sit out and dine whatever the weather.
• Planted the borders and finished: Created planted borders to frame the patio, then jointed, cleaned and sealed the surface for a neat, hard wearing finish.

The Result

A large, easy to maintain porcelain patio that has completely changed how the family use their garden. The gazebo area gives them somewhere sheltered to eat and relax, the curved paths make the whole space feel bigger, and the planted borders keep it soft and welcoming. Built on a properly laid Type 1 sub base, the patio drains well and is ready to enjoy for many years to come.
